Twenty-one year old Edmund Kirby Russell enlisted in the 67th New York, 1st Long Island Volunteers at South Brother Island, NY on June 24, 1861. The same day he was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant of Company K.
Mr. Russell rose to 1st Lieutenant of Company F on April 14, 1862, and transferred to Company K on October 13, 1862. He was mustered in as Captain of Company K on May 3, 1863 after the discharge of Capt. Lewis Peck.
On July 4, 1864, Captain Russell was transferred into Co. A. and finally transferred into the ranks of the 65th New York Infantry on September 1, 1864.
In his new regiment, the Captain made Major by Brevet on December 2, 1864 and finally full Major on June 24, 1865 before Mustering Out on July 17, 1865 at Hall's Hill, VA.
