16th Annual Civil War Weekend at the Grange

Sayville, NY

September 14 - 15, 2024

We returned to the formula of hosting our event two weeks after Labor Day and the fantastic weather returned! Bone dry, clear sky, with lots of breezes. For our 16th time out, the usual characters returned including the the 9th Virginia, & 30th Virginia, the 6th NY Independent Artillery and Town of Islip Town Historian, George Munkenbeck, serving dual duty as Chaplain and surgeon at his hospital. The Sons of Union Veterans, Daughters of Union Veterans, and Society of the Grand Army of the Republic (SOGAR) also returned. Along with our afternoon skirmishes both days and Sunday's church services, and our loading and firing competition, we revived our Paymaster scenario (last held in 2013) where the public learned how the soldiers were paid. On Saturday evening, we held our traditional flag retirement ceremony where we all disposed of worn out flags into the fire in the memory of someone who has passed. And this year we were joined by the family of our recently deceased comrade, Joe Fanuele. Special thanks to contributing photographers including James E. Mazzone and Chris Lauterbach (providing video).
