Twenty-three year old John Roberts enlisted as Private in Co. E, 67th New York, 1st Long Island Volunteers on September 12, 1862 at New York City.
He was promoted to Corporal on Christmas Day 1863, wounded in action at the Wilderness on May 6, 1864, and finally transferred to Co. E of the 65th New York Infantry on September 1, 1864.
