Twenty-five yeard old Gilbert Phelps enlisted with the 67th New York, 1st Long Island Volunteers on May 27, 1861 at Rochester, NY. He mustered in as a Wagoneer in Company H on June 24th.
Mr. Phelps was promoted to Sergeant (February 20, 1862), First Sergeant (October 19, 1862), Second Lieutenant (Christmas 1862), and finally First Lieutenant of Company G on September 28, 1863. On July 4, 1864, Lieutenant Phelps Mustered Out with the rest of the 67th NY at New York City.
