Twenty-six year old Thomas Mills enlisted with the 67th New York, 1st Long Island Volunteers at Brooklyn on May 1, 1861. On June 20, 1861 he was mustered in as 2nd Lieutenant of Company I.
Lt. Mills was promoted to 1st Lt. of Company A on January 18, 1862 and Captain of the same company on August 30, 1862. He was brevetted Major and Mustered Out with the rest of the 67th New York on July 4, 1864 at New York City.
