James Chaplin Beecher was born January 8, 1828 in Boston MA and enlisted on June 20, 1861 at Brooklyn NY as Chaplain for the 67th New York, 1st Long Island Volunteers.
On September 8, 1862, he was discharged at Yorktown VA and was subsequently commissioned into the Field & Staff as Lt. Colonel of the 141st NY Infantry on October 14, 1862. He remained with the 141st NY until discharged on March 7, 1863 at Hunter’s Chapel VA. On May 18, 1863 he was once again commissioned as Lt. Colonel, this time for the 35th CT Infantry. There he reached the rank of Colonel on June 9, 1863 and was finally brevetted Brigadier General on March 13, 1865 before Mustering Out on June 1, 1866.
James Chaplin Beecher died in Elmira NY on August 25, 1886 at the age of 58.
