Horace Virgil Porter


Eighteen year-old Horace Porter enlisted as Private in the 67th New York, 1st Long Island Volunteers on May 24, 1861. On June 20, 1861, he mustered into Co. A.

Private Porter was promoted to Hospital Steward on June 1, 1862. During the summer of 1863, the Private contracted chronic diarrhea and rheumatism. Nevertheless, he re-enlisted on Christmas Day of that very same year. He was transferred out on September 1, 1864 into the Field & Staff of the 65th NY Infantry and was finally discharged from the Army on August 31, 1866 at Washington DC.

On November 25, 1865, Horace Porter married Sarah C. Kegg at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hellersburg, PA with Reverend J.H.A. Kitzmuller presiding.

Horace Virgil Porter died on July 25, 1895 in Cumberland, MD. His wife followed on June 4, 1928.
