Twenty-nine year old George Harper enlisted as Corporal in Company E of the 67th New York, 1st Long Island Volunteers on May 8, 1861 at New York City.
He was promoted to Sergeant on September 30, 1861 and 1st Sergeant on the first day of 1862. After being wounded at the Battle of Seven Pines (May 31, 1862), Mr. Harper advanced to 2nd Lieutenant of Company C on June 2nd, 1st Lieutenant of Company E on Christmas Day, finally achieving the rank of Captain of Company I on November 10, 1863.
Captain Harper was Mustered Out on July 11, 1864 at New York City.
