Twenty-two year old Francis Axson enlisted as Private in Co. E of the 67th New York, 1st Long Island Volunteers on May 8, 1861 at New York City. He re-enlisted on Christmas Day 1863 and was promoted to Corporal on July 30, 1864.
On September 1, 1864, Francis Axson transferred out and into Company E of the 65th New York Infantry.
