Headstone Dedication at Oakwood Cemetery

Bay Shore, NY

November 5, 2023

The Islip Hamlet Historical Society invited George Munkenbeck (14th Brooklyn) and our regiment for a Veterans Day dedication inside Oakwood Cemetery in Bay Shore, Long Island. New headstones were installed for Frederick Jr. & Lee Wright who both fought in the Civil War with their father, Frederick Sr., in the 2nd NY Cavalry. George gave us a brief history of the Wright Family and we fired three volleys in their honor. Ironically, there's a Confederate soldier, Mortimer Ruggles, buried in the very same cemetery who played a small part in the escape of John Wilkes Booth after Lincoln's assassination.
