Few then would have foreseen this become a throbbing metropolis of millions...
but the U.S. Military certainly knew the city was crucial in securing the new state of California...
And so if you drive about 20 minutes south of downtown on I-110 to the neighborhood of Wilmington
you will find LA's remaining link to the American Civil War
